I Love You, Honeybear is a concept album about a guy named Josh Tillman who spends quite a bit of time banging his head against walls, cultivating weak ties with strangers and generally avoiding intimacy at all costs. In a parking lot somewhere he meets Emma, who inspires in him a vision of a life wherein being truly seen is not synonymous with shame, but possibly true liberation and sublime, unfettered creativity. Comments to album Father John Misty - I Love You, Honeybear
Great album, terrible pressing. The sleeve came damaged on the corners, the record itself was warped, there's a lot of surface/pops and the soundscape is really weird on this one. I'm not an audiophile guy so I can't describe it but it just sounds off. Hopefully this album gets a proper quality repress one day.
Great album but this pressing really does not do it justice. The pitch wanders throughout tracks, the dynamic range is poor with noise during silent parts and clipping during louder parts. It's my first LP from Subpop and while I enjoy a lot of the artists on the label, I think I will save my money and just buy digital.
My pressing had a defect on one of the LPs. Super disappointing! Back to the record store it goes.
I've gone through two copies and they both have issues with surface noise... maybe I'm unlucky, but its very loud overpowering the music.
Great pressing with very nice packaging. Overall, this is probably FJM best album.
is it only me? my copy doesn't sound any good. it's not warped but the surface noise is really horrible on this pressing with my modes setup, rega rp6 ortofon om30, schitt mani amd exposure 3010s2. om30 is unforgiving for noise but even with exact it soundsled like this.i will compare with subpop black vinyl soon. then i will learn
Well thats what you should expect with tri colored vinyl.
just played one track on subpop black. it's obvious that this pressing sucks big time. maybe mine is faulty. should i contact bella union... ????
Awesome album, love the hot pink of the vinyl as well - looks very cool. Pressing is average-good. Mastering was very good, but there are quite a few pops. However my biggest complaint is that the hole on the C/D disc was TOO SMALL. I had to take a round file to the damn thing just to be able to fit it onto my turntable! You'd think that after being commissioned to press all of these "audiophile limited edition" pressings, sub pop would make sure that the resulting LPs are playable without a set of hand tools!
If anyone is interested in parting out their cocktail recipe card, contact me.
You can still buy on their website, it's still available:https://www.newburycomics.com/products/father_john_misty-i_love_you_honeybear_exclusive_2_lp?variant=37331894092
I'm satisfied with the copy I received (it was the original preorder). It's got some surface noise that I can't seem to clean off, but it looks like I was fortunate enough to receive a copy that was close enough to being completely flat.
You can still buy this tape directly from Bella Union for way cheaper. (£5 + postage)https://bellaunion.greedbag.com/buy/i-love-you-honeybear-3/
Very nice pressing. standard weight discs, but sounds great. One of the best records of 2015
Tyler Is Not Here
I have the tricolor 2 x 45 RPM LPs, with the apology letter and 18x24 poster of the cover art, no sleeve, that Sub Pop sent out to deluxe edition customers who requested replacement LPs in 2015 when it was discovered the first pressing was warped by the packaging. I don't see this version anywhere on Discogs. Would it be appropriate to add that version of the release, since it has unique materials (letter, poster), or is that gratuitous?
I ordered 2 copies of this "revised" pressing - BOTH copies are still warped af and terrible background noises all over especially on Side D. This is ridiculous Sub Pop!
So did Sub Pop issue any sort of email statement about these? I decided to check mine and it's pretty massively warped and so I sent them a email and I'm waiting to hear back. Wish I saw this thread sooner!
Shit album, shit packaging. Like a Brian Wison wannabe, but not nearly as good. This, Torres and Youth Lagoon are the reasons I cancelled my VMP membership.
Well that's dumb. FJM and Youth Lagoon are great soooooo...
My copy of BELLA476VX includes a CD of the album. Is this standard, or should it have it's own entry?
does this release come with a paper lyrics sheet? I don't have one, even though the pdf booklet download includes one
Hidden Winter
The lyrics are supposed to be on the back of the photo collage.
Packaging is very great on this LP, even the download code.Very nicely done, and the music just takes you on a journey.
Gold Crown
This is a "plain" gatefold with no embedded things popping out. It does include a poster and "excersices for listening". Towards the end of C3 - Bored in the USA the upper audio range seems to become progressively distorted on my playback - does anyone else also have this issue?
I've got a good one for you. Anyone get a side B that isn't Father John Misty but something that sounds more like from Animal Collective? Shazam on the iPhone can't identify it either....
Silver Globol
What did it end up being?
Yep I got one too. No idea what it is. VMP sent me a new copy.
The trick to identifying the mystery side B is to play it at 33 1/3 RPM and not 45. And yes, VMP was on the ball and sent me a new copy.
Got that version. VMP dutifully sent me a new copy but for the life of me, I can't identify it at all too.
Fantastic pressing. I love this album and they really went all out with the packing and attention to detail with the audio quality. I will be playing this album for a long time! Thanks!
any idea on how many were pressed?
WIll give you $30 for a copy
Wild Python
I received my replacement in the mail yesterday and I'm definitely satisfied. It's tri-colored with the same colors like the original too.
Do anyone by chance know if this issue is with a gatefold popup cover?
so people are still flipping the prices, even if they have crappy warped copies to spare, Thanks.
Glad to hear replacements are finally coming! Also why are these already being resold for upwards of $150?? Aren't there like 10,000 copies?..
Replacements getting shipped now!
Have you gotten yours? and will it still be the same color???? I do not know that to expect, they should throw in another pop up cover also hahah
This demo tape was a really cool idea and good motivation to preorder direct from sub pop. I like to track the progression of the music. Check out my review here: https://consumereviewrepeat.wordpress.com/consume-music/i-luv-you-hb-demos/
Title track made me well up. He did it again.
Slightly disappointed that this clear color was touted as a VMP exclusive only to be released as a standard version later on. The cocktail recipe, postcard and art print for this release are pretty plain and gimmicky, though I can't really complain since that's what I signed up for with the VMP subscription! However, I admit that I enjoyed the sarcastic and dark humor of the listening instructions. Musically speaking, this album is fantastic and is on constant rotation on my turntable and the car CD player. One of the best of the year for sure
How is this version different from the other clear version? Are there any identifying characteristics, or just the album inserts?
A gold VMP stamp on the back cover. Plus a sticker on the shrink-wrap stating it as such.
Did anyone ever end up getting their replacements?
Yeah, we'll see about that given subpops track record with this farce of a release
Just got an email saying they'll be shipping out around the first of May.
No, I still haven't gotten my replacements and it's been nearly 2 months..
I got the same response.
I love Mercedes
I'd send them an email asking where the replacement is. I got a nasty email response from their web team awhile ago when I emailed them asking them what to do about my copy and they responded saying they were figuring out what to do. I responded a day later asking where can I return it (before they announced the replacement), and they send me a 3 paragraph email laced with snide comments such as "you do realize we don't make the records ourselves and didn't know of the warping issue until customers started receiving their packages, hopefully?" and "hopefully you can understand that you are not the only person that has been affected by this super unfortunate manufacturing blunder," which I thought was really kind of nasty and I had to hold back from responding asking them why they don't open several records for quality control like any normal retailer/manufacturer of any product does.
I'm sorry if that seemed combative, I've just been fuming over it lately! Haha.
Oh, I completely agree, I am very disappointed and I'm very upset that SubPop still has artists that I like and that I am forced to support them after how poorly this is handled. I was simply pointing out that the "mid-march" date seemed unrealistic, and in no way saying thats an excuse.
I understand that, but for the reasons you mentioned I don't think a customer would be out of line for being upset. If mid-March was unrealistic, they shouldn't have declared it. I think the whole way SP handled the situation was piss poor. I mean, they pressed 10k-ish (big "ish") of what was meant to be a limited release. Then, after sending everyone defective (but still beautiful!) merchandise, proceed to pepper their apologies with jabs at the customer! Saying things like "we promise to never be this outgoing in the future." In my opinion that's bad business.
To be fair, the mid-March timeframe seems a little tight especially considering pressing plants are currently swamped with this vinyl revival, but I don't understand why SubPop would lie about the date and I find this to be the second disappointment in this mess of a pressing (wasn't a cheap purchase either)
I was just about to ask that myself. I've not heard of anyone getting theirs and SubPop hasn't published any news since the "Mid-March" estimate back in February. The disappointment is growing.
How is this version different from the other clear version? Are there any identifying characteristics, or just the album inserts?
The actual record is identical, just the extra inserts are the only difference.
From Sub Pop: We're sorry that many of these fancy, colored-vinyl, deluxe versions of Father John Misty’s new album, I Love You, Honeybear are, it appears, warped!... We are currently making 100% non-warped, colored-vinyl LPs to replace these damaged LPs. We hope to have a delivery date for those soon, and we will update this page as soon as we have that information. Please contact your place of purchase for instructions on how to obtain replacement LPs. If you got it from Sub Pop’s online store please email [email protected] with your name and address, and we will ship you replacement LPs as soon as they arrive, which will likely be around March 3rd 2015.That Father John Misty Defect LP Dust-up: Great Concept, Dumb Execution
The tracklist on this is slightly off. Will update later.
The art print, postcard, and drink recipe are fully shit. The listening notes are a stupid idea in the first place so I just tell myself he's taking the piss out of them with the stupid shit he submitted for these.Great album though. Mine is warped badly, sort of par for the course with Sub Pop it seems.
Yes, it has the midi player. Also, my copy plays just fine, so I'm wondering what was different between the many unplayable copies and the few that seem to be fine. Just a fluke I'd imagine, unless there is some slight variation no one has noticed yet.
How do you put a pvc gatefold on this record? Need to cut it to fit, I think
Does anyone else have a mislabeled version?
jaredLucas I just got around to listening to my copy and the B-side is all instrumental electronic stuff, definitely not Father John Misty. I've heard of several people having this problem
I just got around to listening to my copy and the B-side is all instrumental electronic stuff, definitely not Father John Misty.
In what way is your copy mislabeled?
My copy is playable, but warped.Maybe it would've been a better idea to have the pop-up be a separate book of sorts?
My copy plays fine and isn't warped at all. Guess, I lucked out. Still a mess for most :(
Anyone else get a warped one from Vinyl Me Please? I've heard of issues with the other limited edition, but mine is also unplayable.
Mine is warped badly too. Just barely playable.
Just chiming in - mine was ok. Didn't notice any warping.
Mine also came sorta warped, but thankfully not bad enough that it was unplayable. Weird that it would happen to the non-deluxe ones too. I wonder what the issue was with this pressing.
Mine is playable but still warped. Sub-Pop is replacing them next month.
Got this in today.. does anyone else have a mislabel?
in what way is yours mislabeled?
Received mine today just now. No mislabeling - in what way is your copy mislabeled?
Sub-Pop claims they will be "less ambitious" in the future with their releases. While I'm not happy that the release is arriving damaged, I don't think this should discourage them from being creative with LP releases. Hopefully they still place that creativity in future goals.
A farce of a pressing, would've been better just buying the standard edition. Even if the warped discs are replaced, it is the packaging that warped them so the discs can never be stored in the packaging anyways. Huge mess on the part of Sub Pop.
I would agree that is a reasonable concern. Especially after all the trouble for those waiting for a replacement, fully functional set of LP's. Perhaps a "DISCLAIMER" is in order.
To be clear it was NOT the unique case itself that caused the vinyls to become warped, the issue occurred once the item was to be shrink wrapped, at least according to Sub Pop as you can see here: "In short, the extra, bulging thickness of the pop-up art in the Father John Misty jacket creates a lump that, when the LPs are sealed and packed, pushes into the LPs, causing the vinyl to warp..." - f/ https://www.subpop.com/news/2015/02/11/on_the_subject_of_the_deluxe_lp_edition_of_father_john_mistys_i_love_you_honeybear(Select link to read further about the "FJM - I Love You, Honeybear" tri-color Deluxe Edition debacle from Sub Pop) That being said, when Sub Pop does send you the replacement LP's you would be able to store the new, non-warped copies safely.
I agree. I am personally hoping it was just the pressure of the shrink wrap that pressed the vinyl into the midi player hard enough to cause the warping. I still house my vinyls (thankfully not warped) in the gatefold and they've not become warped. However, I am too worried about putting it amongst my other records on my shelf for fear that they will put too much pressure on it.
Was it 10K pressed for this edition or 10K (total pressed) for the 3 different editions? It seems crazy to me that Sub Pop would press 10K for just this edition.
I asked them if it was for this specific release and they said yes. They were nasty about it too. They were like "we know what limited edition means."
My copy is unplayable. It's a real shame.
My copy is crap! Sub Pop says March for replacements.
Can only underline what  michelgross said: The vinyl is very heavy and sounds great. Not 100 percent warp free but still all right.I got lucky and received the "Demos" on tape with my order, they come on a "Type I" cassette from UR. Until now I wasn't able to open the cassette though and give it a listen because the cassette case seems heavily frozen somehow (very strange). Also I really didn't like the record sleeves, they are so tight it was a fight to get the records out without touching the surface. Had to change them, now it works fine. One last note: Be sure to download the SAP-version of the album at http://www.fatherjohnmisty.com/sap/ . The SAP modulation thing seems a hoax and the songs sound really awful but still they are some kind of experimental instrumental lo-fi versions of the tracks in full length. Who knows how long they will be officially available.
did anybody have trouble with the activating the tune when opening the cover mine wont play any ideas
Does this version also has the activated midi player like the Europe version?
Yes, it plays the music when you open the gatefold.
Gold as Heart
Whilst the US version of this deluxe edition has a warp defect, the EU version is flawless: the records are flat, quite and heavy and they do sound great. The vinyl is only duo-colored and not tri-colored like in the US, but the packaging seems to be identical. Additionally, you get the CD version of the album as well. Highly recommended!
My copy is unplayable. Beautiful packaging though! Hopefully getting a replacement though Merchline isn't too much of a headache...
Same here! I'm hoping it works out and I get the replacement LPs
Both my discs have the Side A & B track list label. Anyone else?
That happened to me as well, but I was too distracted by the warped vinyl.
happy light
The pre-order page said it had "alternate artwork" - does anyone know if the mail pre-order has different artwork than the Deluxe/Limited available in shops?
The colors are different on deluxe covers
I believe the alternate artwork just refers to the inside of the jacket due to the pop up.
SUB POP just announced these to be discontinued until announced otherwise due to a warp defect. They are taking returns from store it was purchased. These might have gone up in value if urs isn't warped
No they are not pressing 10,000 more. I've talked with Sub Pop. "We're making a limited number of replacement LPs for those who alreadybought the record, but we're not going to be repressing the entirepackage/quantity."
I'm waiting to hear back on how many were sold before canceling orders
They're repressing 10k more to replace all of the warped ones
wow - 10k were pressed of the limited edition? That's a fair bit to press up. I'm guessing that they had to press 10K copies to make it affordable to make in the first place considering the amount of gimmicks included.
They told me on Twitter they were repressing them all. Tweet has since been deleted, they clearly realized how stupid that would be. Either way the value of this is shot because there'll be so many warped copies in circulation trying to be sold as "new" that people will be scared to invest.
Cherry The Countess
No. They r ONLY repressing the ones returned by customers. U have no clue what u r talking about. I've talked to SubPop. They also stopped taking anymore orders of this deluxe pressing.
There'll be 20k copies of this once they repress it as well, granted a hefty amount of the first pressing were warped.
Sub Pop's site says that all LPs play at 45rpm but 45 is way higher-pitched than the MP3s and 33 1/3 plays in slow-mo....anyone else getting these problems?
Ha, that's why everything else plays fine?...
It's your turntable
It might be a little high but it's not that noticeable to me. I've also been listening to the leak on my phone with headphones compared to the vinyl coming through speakers... I'm just thankful my record isn't warped!
I did notice "Chateau Lobby #4" sounded a bit higher than I'm used to hearing on the radio. I just assumed it was because of the warp on the record.
it noticed the pitch was a bit high but nothing extremely distinct
Calling this "limited edition" is a bit of a reach on Sub Pop's behalf considering 10k copies of it were pressed. https://twitter.com/subpop/status/562714010085507072
Sounds like a heap of these were bust pressings — unplayably warped.
My lp1 was playable and the warp was still real. LP2 on the other hand was pretty good except for a little bump on side b but at that point I was just nit-picking.
Hilarious Kangaroo
I emailed SubPop yesterday. They replied that the manufacturer that installed the sound card used a glue that somehow wasn't dried properly or had some chemical reaction that caused the records to warp in one spot toward the edge, which is what I experienced. I bought mine directly from their site and they are replacing the discs (once they have replacements pressed). Not sure how they are handling those that were shipped to the thousands of record stores. What a mess!
Likely due to the soundbox inside pressing on the records too much.
Yeah... all three that the record store near me got were warped. Two of them still played fine, but I have yet to try my copy.
