The Symphony in D minor is the most famous orchestral work and the only mature symphony written by the 19th-century naturalised French composer César Franck. After two years of work, the symphony was completed 22 August 1888. It was premiered at the Paris Conservatory on 17 February 1889 under the direction of Jules Garcin. Franck dedicated it to his pupil Henri Duparc. Camille Saint-Saëns. Leonard Bernstein, Orchestre National de France. blue highlight denotes track pick. This Franck D minor Sym. is from a live concert in 1981 with the relatively new Orchestre National de France. I haven't heard LB's first version with the NY Phil, but this one is certainly charismatic. At his best, Bernstein made a personal connection with any score, ignoring whether it was a warhorse or a mastrpiece it could be both, of course. You'd never imagine that the Franck was tired and cliched form this performance, which is gripping from first note to last. Cesar Franck finished his Symphony in D minor in 1888. It is usually considered his only mature symphony, and it took two years to reach its final form, being premired at the Paris Conservatory in 1889. It was dedicated to Franck's pupil, Henri Duparc. A recent wave of symphonic-like compositions by Charles Valentin Alkan, Saint Saens, and Franck himself had created an renowed interest in the form, though it was far from being popular, as it was considered a mainstay of the German musical culture. Franck, as the rest of his contemporary composers, differentiatied from the German style resorting to the cyclic structure. Album 1994 7 Songs. You'd never imagine that the Franck was tired and cliched form this performance, which is gripping from first note to last. The orchestra plays beautifully, and the early digital sound is excellent despite the absence of remastering. Some listeners may fear that the tics of late Bernstein will intrude, especially his tendeny to hold on to every note for dear life, which led to some very broad tempos.
