Comments to album Planet Hemp - Usuário
Trash
The group was originally formed by Skunk who, in the early 1990s, met rapper Marcelo D2 at the time he was selling T-shirts in downtown Rio. So at that time, Skunk and Marcelo D2 wanted to form a Rap duo this around 1992/1993. But they had no equipment.

In 1993, the duo met guitarist Rafael, drummer Bacalhau and bassist Formigão and, in a matter of few rehearsals, composed the first songs. Therefore, still in 1993, the group was already performing in alternative places in the cities of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, playing songs such as "Porcos Fardados", "Phunky Budda", "P...Disfarçada", among others.

In 1994, Planet Hemp met producer Elza Cohen, who at that time was organizing a festival with independent groups called Super Demo. Super Demo, by the way, was responsible for launching the first Planet Hemp record the following year. The founder of the group, Skunk, did not witness this moment, as he died of AIDS in 1994.

The record came to the world at a time when few records in Brazil were released, because at that time, the market was turned to the cd. The circulation was limited and therefore became a difficult item to obtain, considering that Planet Hemp was a group that reached the general public in the 1990s. The first time I heard this record was on my brother's birthday in 1995. A friend of my brother brought the cd as a gift. It marked me deeply. It was a moment of puberty excitement, a sense of discovery of a new horizon.

When people in Brazil hear the name of the band - Planet Hemp - they automatically remember group lyrics that dealt with legalizing marijuana, such as "Legalize Já" and "Mantenha O Respeito", which happened to have In fact, Planet Hemp discovered a certain breach in the market: the possibility of dialogue with the public through a taboo theme in Brazil (and in the world): the use of drugs. However, although much of the disclosure of the record was based on the lyrics about marijuana, what has been little commented on about this record concerns its musical aesthetics.

In the 1990s, 99% of Brazilian Music criticism was completely linked to Rock and MPB. A record that belonged to another style of music that was not part of these two worlds would be completely neglected by the Brazilian critics, or, to a certain extent, would receive a superficial and dubious critique. Therefore, this record was doubtfully classified as a Rock record by Brazilian Music critics. What few realize - and still can't realize - is that this record is not quite a Rock record, but a record that fuses elements of Rock, Funk and Rap.

In my field of perception, I see that both Marcelo D2 and Skunk - as well as B Negão, who also shared the microphones with the duo and became the second part of the group's rappers after Skunk's death - brought the influence of Rap to the band. The influence of Cypress Hill is clear, especially in lyrics, as well as groups such as Public Enemy, NWA and De La Soul, which appear in samples or in references in lyrics. The track "Porcos Fardados", for example, has samples from NWA "Fuck The Police"; the track "P ...Disfarçada", brings a reference to the song "Sophiscated Bitch", by Public Enemy.

It is worth remembering that the incredible and short track called "Deis das Seis" is one of the first Ragga that the brazilian public met with lyrics in portuguese. At the end of the record, another surprise: the track "A Culpa É De Quem?" does not seem to fit the concept, the aesthetics of the record; maybe that's why this track was put to be at the end of the album. This track may be a musical memory of Marcelo D2 and B Negão about Rio's 80s suburban parties, Baile Funk, as it has uptempo beats similar to the sound that played in Rio in the middle of the late 1980s, Electro Bass.

At the same time, the band had a rock band formation, with bass, drums and guitar, and also brought influences of Punk Rock and Hardcore, which are clear on tracks like "Bala Perdida", Mary Jane" and "Muthafuckin' Racists". The last two, by the way, promote a mix of Rock and Rap that resembles something from Body Count, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy or the Judgment Night soundtrack. I believe the group had an original idea of bringing a band to compose their musical bases. Because Planet Hemp was a band in Brazil in the 1990s, it made the band go through a larger circus of shows, events, which would be narrower in my view if they were a rap group with mc and dj at that very moment.

However, what Brazilian Music critics have forgotten (or ignored) since the birth of this record is that this record is undoubtedly one of the Brazilian records most influenced by the (Psychedelic) Funk of the early 1970s within the range of records released in the 1990s.Again, I say that Planet Hemp had a good idea of using a band: in that sense, a band that provided Funk 70's music bases for rappers to sing on those bases, unlike much of the stuff made in the 90s, whose musical premise was to reinvent Funk 70s (or the 1980s) through the use of samples. This made the band have a unique musical identity.

Funkadelic influences clearly appear on tracks such as "Não Compre Plante", "Fazendo Sua Cabeça", Skunk", "Phunky Buddah" and "P...Disfarçada". Listen to these tracks and you'll be transported to the Funkadelic early record environment, hovering over Dennis Coffey, Mandrill and Sly & The Family Stone. Add to that Rap and Rock influences. You have the first album of Planet Hemp. It permeates these universes, that is, it is the result of this hybrid mix of musical styles.
