It took its creators, a group of students going by the name The Avalanches, from their Melbourne, Australia houses to international musical stardom. Standout tracks include album opener and title track Since I Left You , a soundscape of a perfect beach party, and the utterly unique, John Waters-sampling Frontier Psychiatrist. The Avalanches spent the next three years perfecting Since I Left You, and the extensive amount of time paid to the creation of this album certainly paid off as this is an amazing 60-minute experience. That's right, I said it, an experience. During the time working on Since I Left You, the Avalanches put on an outlandish live show, and played with the Beastie Boys and Public Enemy. But while those groups rely heavily on lyrical content, the Avalanches rely heavily on samples repeated over and over in various catchy, infectious ways. Like many dance records, Since I Left You thrives on fee

Comments to album The Avalanches - Since I Left You
One of the most overrated albums of the 2000s. It's more an undisciplined mixtape than an album – an incessant mess of sickly, syrupy excerpts. The samples are chosen without any particular purpose in mind. As band member Robbie Chater told 'Sound on Sound' magazine, 'We were really unorganised and were just sampling on the fly as tracks progressed … Plus that was in our days of getting kinda, um, lubricated so who the f*ck knows. It's all kinda fuzzy!'. Unsurprisingly the entire album stinks of this stoner aesthetic: 'really unorganised' and 'kinda fuzzy'. It must have been a firm favourite with Spring Break morons. It is incredible that something so amateurish could be released four years after DJ Shadow's 'Endtroducing …'. The Avalanches had none of Shadow's flair for arrangement, and you'd think that any of the earlier masters of sampling, from Cabaret Voltaire to The Art Of Noise to The Bomb Squad, had never existed. One can only assume that many of the people who loved 'Since I Left You' had never heard of those acts. The whole thing is so undisciplined that the brief interludes ('Avalanche Rock', 'Pablo's Cruise', et al) are indistinguishable from the longer tracks. In many cases, samples from one track later swoop in and out on the next. This adds to the sense that each track has no identity of its own, and is merely a shapeless part of a larger shapeless mush.'And he also made false teeth!' yelps another irrelevant, unfunny sample on 'Frontier Psychiatrist'. It's pathetic stuff, but is still fondly recalled by dogpilers.
This review does not count as anything substantial you are being nitpicky and biased I win bye bye.

Would anybody be interested in an original pressing? Send me a PM!
This superior version to the one that was released can be found on reddit as wav/flac in case you can't find a physical copy.Happy hunting boys.
Humanity needs this to be officially released ASAP, wonder will this ever come out
If it’s an anniversary thing it’ll probably release it in the latter half of the year since the record came out in November of 2000
Just listened through for the first time, the rerecorded samples for Frontier Psychiatrist were quite jarring, probably go as far to say they actually sound bad and kind of ruin it.The rest was enjoyable though and glad to finally have this.So if Frontier is your favourite track I would avoid, otherwise it's a good listen
I had this shortly after 2001. I still have it on CDr copy somewhere.. Listening to it now from my puter, it does sound a lot better than the version released - far richer sounding, thanks to all the original samples, and the extra track of course.
looking for a near mint copy that is opened. Unfortunately my copy of the cassette got destroyed, so now I'm looking for a new one.
A deluxe reissue is coming according to their Instagram and will include the GIMIX mix. Don’t bother with the latest pressing, save up for the new version. Who knows? Maybe “Frontier Psychiatrist” got cleared.
I have a few things to say about this pressing:1. The spindle hole on the second disc is so small I have to manually turn the spindle while pulling up on the record to get it off. This may be specific to my copy.2. Frontier Psychiatrist is fine. For the people who are confused about this, here's the rundown. This album uses a ridiculous amount of samples, and I guess they couldn't get the rights to use some of the samples in the song "Frontier Psychiatrist", so they re-recorded some. This makes one or two of the samples in the song feel like they don't quite fit in, but honestly it's not that big of a problem. It's just one song and it's only a few samples. Doesn't take away from the experience in my opinion.3. There is a significant amount of surface noise in my copy. Only noticeable when you play it really loud though.Actually that's it. A few annoyances, but overall I'm satisfied with my copy and will be listening to it many times.
BUYERS BEWARE!The 2012 and 2016 UK & Europe Reissues are being sold by unscrupulous sellers as the 2001 UK Original as they share the same catalogue and bar code numbers. BEFORE BUYING, be sure to make the seller check the matrix numbers which are:Matrix / Runout (Runout side A hand-etched): XLLP 138 A1 DAMONT MIKE'S ™ - THE EXCHANGE (S.D)Matrix / Runout (Runout side B hand-etched): XLLP 138 B1 DAMONT MIKE'S ™ - THE EXCHANGEMatrix / Runout (Runout side C hand-etched): XLLP 138 C-4 DAMONT MIKE'S ™ - THE EXCHANGEMatrix / Runout (Runout side D hand-etched): XLLP 138 D1 DAMONT MIKE'S ™ - THE EXCHANGE (S.D)IT IS HIGHLY UNLIKELY THAT THE SEALED VERSIONS AVAILABLE HERE ARE 2001 UK ORIGINALS!According to the info here on Discogs, the reissues have a blue spine. On the original, the album artwork can be seen on the spine. GOOD LUCK!
Frontier Psychiatrist sounds weird with the new vocals. Might as well call them that since they were lyrics recorded specifically for the song.
This sounds a bit like a lighter version of "Endtroducing"... The sample collage is incredible (I've noticed several horse noises though, apparently they like it ^^).Seriously, this is the kind of music that MUST be played on a sunny day, like on the beach or in your car. The whole CD is such a thing of beauty and rhythm. Its Australian nationality makes it more exotic. I'll stop here, 'cause everything has already been said. One of the best productions from the first year of the 21st century, and also one of my favorite Australian acts along with EK and Sonic Animation.
If anyone has this and is looking to sell I'm willing to pay a full $10 USD for it (dead serious, TEN whole dollars, I want it THAT bad) send me a message, thanks!!!
looking for one sealed copy, thanks! (4 more words needed)
Quite simply an incredible album from start to finish, deserves to be heard.
So they couldn't clear all the Frontier Psychiatrist samples. What are you gonna do? It's not their fault. It's also only one song. Every single cut on here is a classic. It's still a lovely re-issue.
An absolutely wonderful album. The only big noticeable difference is Frontier Psychiatrist has been remastered and the samples have been retouched and reorganised, due to being unable to clear the original samples. It's quite unfortunate and would recommend anyone buy the album but do purchase the Frontier Psychiatrist single if they do find it.
Dont buy this version. Samples are replaced from the original with no indication they would be. Better off picking up more recent bootlegs.
Yup they didnt get the rights to Wayne and Shuster, makes Frontier Psychiatrist kinda funny. Sounds like John Lithgow
Really ? That's awful I just picked it up too.
One of my favorite albums of all time. Defined sampling. Always love when my favorite albums get pressed in color! Samples for Frontier Psychiatrist are not as smooth, but it is a unique version.
Where to find this release in Europe, any store list ?
I'm so confused on what songs are missing OG samples and where to compare against 2017 release on blue vinyl. Can anyone help me? Thx
Only the US version of Frontier Psychiatrist sounds like it was mixed differently.
The version of Frontier Psychiatrist included on this pressing had the re-recorded samples. Otherwise, it's the same as the standard international version available digitally and the EU vinyl pressing issued last year.
that's mildly dissapointing. kind of glad I went for the import when it was cheap
Could you elaborate - does this pressing have the 'blue wave' imagery? XL were not supposed to be pressing as part of the 2017 'blue sily' re-release. XL did its own reissues in 2012 and 2016. Are you sure you haven't conflated them?
Anyone know whether this release has the original samples, or are they the re-release redone versions of the samples?
Some pressings have certain samples in "Frontier Psychiatrist" replaced, which was done for legal reasons in early 2000s. They were later re-instated and I believe their inclusion on this 2017 issue is a massive oversight.
Why would the samples be redone? Did you see something stating that?
Not original samples.... who decided to re-record these samples? very disappointed!
Amazingly, this version, labeled modular, does NOT have the original "Frontier" samples :( Remains to be seen if, as is reported elsewhere on discogs, XL have pressed some blue vinyl as part of this run, which (if they indeed did) may or may not have the original 'frontier psychiatrist.'
Bought my copy yesterday and I'm not breaking the seal until this is answered haha.
Confused with the 'finally available' tag. XL issued this last year (OK, not on blue vinyl), didn't they?
yes, XL reissued in 2012, 2016. This is the first domestic reissue for Australia, on Modular.
XL sure did... I believe that this release however was promoted over a period of time. Punters where asked to go online and vote for their preferred colour, blue got the nod.
just one girl
Not noticed any samples missing. Does anyone have a list of exactly the differences and sources and track times from the original LP press. Sounds as I remember.
Does this version use the original "Frontier Psychiatrist" samples or the re-recorded versions?
Good pressing. Sure, it's still missing the samples from the Zomba-promo and the first Australian pressing, so it's like the version you get when you buy the CD-version, iTunes-version, or listen to the album through Spotify or Apple Music.Only problem i have with is that there's some sibilance on side D during "Live at Dominoes". Otherwise, no inner groove-distortion present.Get this while you can before the price shoots up. My local record store sells this for 31,95€, and even that was pushing the limit for me.
That's what I thought at the time, as well. Pre-ordered for 60$ CAN. Was so bummed when they announced months later they would be dropping the Astralwerks / Modular Recordings (2017). Which ended up being a cheaper and inferior pressing - and all it did was decrease the value of this one. Should have waited since they are both the same price now. Market value aside, it's still well worth the spins.
are there different samples on this one compared to the original?
A few samples had to be removed over time because copyright.
listen to this album from the different times it was released/re-released. i have 3 copies of this album CD (2000), CD (2001), LP (2016) and it make me sad listening to them. with the progressing of time, samples had to be excluded and you slowly see the integrity of the album failing. its not the artists fault, but greedy individuals who care nothing of art but the lining of their own pocket.
It's exactly the same. Why would it be different? Are you joking?
Does anyone actually have their hands on this? Is this an official Repress from XL ?
I have 3 original year 2000 copies ☮ & wellness
Yeah picked up a copy from Piccadilly Records last week, 100% legit and quality.Think it may have sold out already.
I have a copy that I ordered from DRIFT in UK. It is a legitimate reissue. Fine quality pressing. Original artwork. No worries.
Trash Obsession
Just got my copy today. It looks and sounds like a legit official repress from XL. Normally unofficial pressings have flimsy, poorly printed covers and the sound quality is questionable. This has none of that.
I just sold my copy for US$24. Is it really worth over $100?
The best way to tell the difference between the 3 Modular Recordings MODCD009 versions is the length of track 3 Radio. On the earlier versions with more samples in tact Radio will play for 4:52 rather than 4:22. Now to distinguish between the two where the track radio is the same length (4:52) Track 11 will be titled "Tonight May Have To Last Me All My Life" on the very first pressing where as it will be called "Tonight" on the second pressing. I hope that makes sense, as to why people have shelled out more money for the second pressing over the first i cant explain.I think ill have to buy all 3 copies & have them infront of me to figure it out lol!
There are a few different releases of the album that look practically identical where the only difference is samples being removed from certain tracks due to legal issues, my understanding is the first round with all the samples in tact is the sought after version. Trying to figure out what version you have exactly is kinda confusing, im trying to figure it out at the moment my self lol...
not anymore - now there is a re-release :) suckers!
Finally a release for not stupid money (hundreds of pounds) I've listened through and it sounds more than good enough to enjoy at home or spin out. Official or not i'm happy, thumbs up yo!
Ordered online from Amazon - it looks legit and it's widely available in a lot of record shops in London. Nice gatefold sleeve, sadly plain paper inner sleeves and with no download code. Thin-ish vinyl - not 180g. A lot of static with my copy but it sounded pretty good after a brush, though not as good as the recent EU/UK deluxe version of Wildflower. Flight Tonight particularly sounds awesome. In terms of samples, it's the version currently on Spotify, so you get the original Frontier Psychiatrist samples but are missing a few bits and pieces here and there (the Midnight Run dialogue during Diners and the dialogue sample at the start of Radio). Room for improvement? Yeah, maybe. But I'm not complaining - great to have a decent sounding copy of this at an affordable price after all these years! Whack it on and enjoy the rest of the summer...
How to see/know if its the repress or the original?
If you payed less than £5000 for it it's a repress
just wondering, does this contain the altered samples on frontier psychiatrist?
Nope -- the originals are used for this version. Cool!
Global Progression
2016 vinyl repress is legit, got copies for our store from PIAS which is the official distributor for XL in the UK. I have to admit I'm surprised they're not really pushing this, as so many people have asked for it over the last two months. Watch out though, there is no 2016 date on the back of the sleeve, just dated as 2000 and 2001, so be wary of anyone trying to shift sealed original pressings, as it may well just be this repress.
Got my copy today, listening to it right now for the first time. looks & sounds legit. but the lack of publicity is really surprising. it's not even mentioned on the XL recordings homepage.
Same samples as older pressings? Hope it sounds 'complete' !
Also got my copy today/yesterday. Sounds fine, but I'm also skeptical about this whole thing. The record has been popping up around stores all over Europe, so it has to be a relatively large pressing. What do you think about the cover by the way? I haven't seen any previous pressings in real life, but doesn't it look a bit low-res? Nonetheless, I'm happy that I finally got the opportunity to own this on vinyl.
Given the lack of publicity I'm VERY skeptical that this 2016 pressing is official.
Definitely legit - Distributed from XL by the official channels. More a repress than a reissue!
It's repressed by XL. So it is 100 percent an official release.
"Info sheet shows that only 5 copies were handed out by XL in this manner"... 6 people own this. Huh?
heart of sky
Are th samples still in tact on this promo release
nope. same as international with the re-recorded Frontier Psychiatrist despite the matching track durations
Anyone know if this release had the altered samples of other releases?
codybrom Anyone know if this release had the altered samples of other releases? I've got this one - it uses the altered samples, not the originals.
Abandoned Electrical
So somebody just spoonfeed me, which of the vinyl versions have all of the samples intact, if any?
Near as I can tell, none of them. Not even the original Modular pressing. I can't verify that, as I only have the XL pressing. But it's what I've read.
Can a bootleg label press a 2LP of the promo version, please? This is one case where it would actually be welcome.
lucky kitten
A rare test pressing issue on XL also exists of this. Brilliant LP! :)
There's talk on the band and the album's Wiki that there was to be a deluxe 2xCD version of this, does anyone know if it was ever released anywhere?
I don't like the sound of this re issue. It's flat and not clear like original one.
You rate 1/5 yet it's in your wantlist?! Seems like a feeble attempt to get the price down...
Scored mine at louie louie on vacation in Lisbon! Vinyl has amazing color!
I've got it. (MODVL004 catalog number, no mention of XL anywhere.) But like was previously mentioned there's what looks like a "scratched out" XL 138 in the disc matrix. As far as I can tell this is identical to the standard issue version with the missing samples and the altered samples on Frontier Psychatrist, and as far as I know the only non-digital way to get versions with all the samples intact are very early CD pressings. By the looks of it they removed the samples before ANY vinyl was pressed and the Australian and UK versions come from the same masters. I don't think there was an earlier version with all the samples on vinyl, and I have yet to hear someone say otherwise, but I could be wrong. Maybe there were two Australian presses (i.e. a 2000 and 2001 issue).
So you/re saying this version doesnt have the samples on it? How does it sound? Is it anything worth buying it?
I imagine that interest in this album will increase even more when The Avalanches finally drop their fabled new album, which is deep in the mix now. I never thought prices would be driven this high in the mean time despite no real news of a pending release from them.
Everyone bitches about this version of the record. Id rather have this than the one with less samples. It doesn't have the intro bit to Radio, the voices are different in Frontier Psychiatrist, and it doesn't have the flutes in Extra Kinds. It's a new sound, and very unique all together, just deal with it and enjoy it for what it is.
This version contains an extra track and extra samples(?) not even on the origional Australian release!
I'd imagine that the problem with reissue of the record would be sample clearance?
Reissue that has black vinyl, rather then the blue marbled ones.
net rider
Wow, this is already selling for crazy prices! I wish I'd kept hold of my copy
Does anyone know how many of these were made?
Can someone confirm for me the following. My copy has MODVL004 on the labels, under Modular. The Gatefold has MODVL004 too. The etchings are for example on side C: "XLLP 138 C1 DAMONT" then "MIKE'S - THE EXCHANGE (S.D)." then "M" then "MLRI-60004-C".This suggests XLLP 138... but frontier psychiatrist sounds fine to me. Also the all etchings of "XLP 138" have been lightly scratched out. As has the lone "M" on this side. The scratching is the same depth as used for etching DAMONT, which features underneath the scratched out XXLP 138.Thoughts? Is this MODVL004? Is it XLLP 138 in sheep's clothing? Is it something else?
I've added an entrly for this variation, pls check out: The Avalanches - Since I Left You
Unfortunately, this is the "worst" possible edit of the album. Its the truncated version of Radio and most of the dialogue samples in Frontier Psychiatrist are re-done. It sounds pretty awful, especially if you're used to the original edit. This obviously isn't down the The Avs', or even XL, but the sample clearance BS that comes with releasing an album like this. I guess to get it even out there, something has to give. Oddly, as far as I remember the UK single release used the original Wayne and Shuster samples.
can't find or see this resissue anywhere.
Can I buy this yet or no? Where even can I buy it? Wouldn't mind paying the shipping to the US.
I need this, where is it :(
One of my favourite albums of all time - a musical masterpiece of the highest degree. I don't really need to say any more!
Beware of this release as the copyright people cut out almost a full minute from the original release's mix that contained samples they didn't like, due to legal issues. The removals included: Wayne and Shuster's "I Was a TV Addict" ("Radio" spoken intro); a sample from the film "Midnight Run" starring Robert De Niro (spoken conversation in "Diners Only"), and a guitar/strings sample (in the middle of "Little Journey"); furthermore, there was a drastic alteration to "Summer Crane" which added weird whistling/wind samples. I don't know about you, but I'd rather return this to the store and continue listening to the original before the band releases their promised deluxe edition (which, hopefully, (although unlikely) restores the deleted samples).
The vinyl is not just translucent blue, it's laced with a darker vinyl. When you hold the disc up to the light, it looks just like the ocean waves shown on the LP cover. A stunning effect.

(taken from tweeter 40min ago&referring to SILY [email protected])"Jus to clarify this is NOT the deluxe reissue w/ new art / bonus disks / unheard sily demos @ tonnes of extras coming later this year."
That one is going to be digital only, as far as I know.
Is there any way I can get this in the US? I don't want to end up paying a billion dollars for shipping.
I got mine for $30 shipped to NJ from sirendisc.com
I just ended up getting it on amazon.co.uk. Came shy of $30 which isn't terrible, I guess. It wasn't the shipping that racked up the price so high, really, just the poor exchange rate between dollars and pounds.
Is this record officially out yet? Where can i buy it? Thanks...
It was supposed to be released the end of this month I think, but there are already people selling it here in Discogs.
I discovered The Avalanches when a friend sent me a CD with some mp3s of various artists. It was several years ago, my computer was still running windows 98 and the mp3s were a new technology for me. He sent me Frontier Psychiatrist and Undersea Community. These tracks fascinated me and i wanted to learn more about the Avalanches' music. They used the sampling technique, cutting out small sample from their huge collection of old records. Then mixed together, adding more intstruments, effects and turntablism tricks. I think this record is unique and really original. One of my favourites of the 2000's for sure. If you like Trip-HopIndieBalearic music this release will please you! It's a sort of concept album, as the tracks are mixed together. But i still didn't found a concept on this release, as for me is only a beautiful album that I will never get tired of.,
Beware of this version of the vinyl. It has been edited to please the overlords, I mean, copyright people. It is definitely not what the guys had envisioned when originally creating this beautiful and necessary work. I've listened to both Entroducing and this quite extensively, and I have to give it to The Avalanches for topping Entroducing. One could not exist without the other, but I feel the Avalanches pushed the limit on the amount and obscurity as opposed to Shadow. My favourite has changed quite a bit on this record, is no longer Frontier Psychiatrist. That is taken by "A Different Feeling" or "Stay Another Season." This record takes me back to playing basketball on blacktop as well as kickball in the cul-de-sac during the summer, just as one reviewer envisioned on All-Music. A time where I was mixing it up and truly being a kid. Again, the LP that you want is MODVL004. This is the Australian version with all samples intact, but sadly without the amazing song "Everyday." The best album of 2000.
Better than Entroducing? You're having a laugh..
i don't understand... what is missing from the UK version of the vinyl? what samples?
Mitars Riders
Fantastic. Sent me into another world every time I listened to this in 2000...The theme of my year. I walked in rhythm to the whole cd. Best with original samples, as I heard the second re sample version and its a horror. Check out 'Radio' with the original sample of the guy who just watches the test pattern. Like all great sample based sounds its very witty too, a la De La Soul.
It has been since <I>Bran Van 3000</I>’s ‘97 <I>Drinking In L.A.</I> I came across a record that brought you that a bit nostalgic private party mood, as if you were actually there. Pure emotion: a lot of environmental snippets, Goldfrapp style Bond & Co soundtracks, funky tripped out hip hop voices keeping the party level up, fragments of hit singles you used to dance to, ringing telephones no one cares about, laughter in the garden, swimming pool fun…<BR> And afterwards you say : “Ahh, it’s been a long time we had so much fun!”
So this is what summer sounds like: warm and with a kitchen sink full of samples. Amazingly, The Avalanches’ creations have life and vigor, managing to sound alive through a cut-and-paste sonic wall. You’ll go blind trying to read the sample clearances. The first four tracks set the standard for the rest to follow – beautiful and groovy. Sure, a few of the subsequent tracks are mere filler, but the stand-outs make <I>Since I Left You</I> a joy to listen to. Listen to the vocals on “Electricity” or the John Waters sample on “Frontier Psychiatrist” and you’ll know what I mean.
