Over Rising is the fourth single by the English alternative rock band The Charlatans, released in February 1991. Reaching number 15 in the UK, it followed The Only One I Know and Then into the UK top 20, and reached number seven in Ireland, where it remains the group's only top 10 hit. Although Over Rising was never featured on any studio album, it did appear on the Charlatans' first greatest hits compilation, 1998's Melting Pot. It was one of two non-album singles. Over Rising. The Charlatans were an American folk rock and psychedelic rock band that played a role in the development of the San Francisco Haight-Ashbury music scene during the 1960s. The self-titled Charlatans album, later released as San Francisco 1969, is a rather gorgeous and gently challenging piece of San Francisco rock, incorporating elements of blues and big-band swing, as well as '50s rock & roll and elegant '60s pop. It might not be as quite as overpowering creatively as the best records by the Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver, or Grateful Dead, but it is one of the prettiest and most subtly beguiling albums to come out of the '60s San Francisco scene, and is also essential listening, as well as being just plain delightful.
